Wondering if your ceiling fan is smart-home ready, or if it’s still stuck in 2005? Before you rip it off the ceiling or order the latest WiFi gizmo, use our handy compatibility checklist to find out what kind of smart upgrades your fan can handle — especially if it’s a Hampton Bay.
Why Compatibility Matters
Not all ceiling fans play nice with smart home tech. Some are born smart (fancy), others need a little help (Bond Bridge, anyone?), and a few are completely hopeless (we see you, ancient pull chain fan).
This page will help you figure out if your fan can be upgraded for voice control, app control, or full-on automation.
Step 1: Identify Your Fan
- Brand: Hampton Bay, Hunter, Harbor Breeze, etc.
- Model Number: Usually found on a sticker on the top of the motor housing or inside the canopy. A ladder may be required. A flashlight definitely is.
- Remote Included? If yes, it might already be using RF (radio frequency).
Step 2: Does Your Fan Already Have Smart Features?
Check the box or manual for these keywords:
- Wi-Fi Enabled – Can connect directly to your router
- Bluetooth – App control only (usually via close range)
- Smart Compatible – Might work with Alexa, Google, or HomeKit
- Bond Compatible – Can be upgraded with a Bond Bridge
Popular Hampton Bay Models and Compatibility
| Model | Smart Ready? | Upgrade Option |
|---|---|---|
| Hampton Bay Mara | Yes | Built-in Wi-Fi, works with Google & Alexa |
| Hampton Bay Southwind | No | Use Bond Bridge or install smart wall switch |
| Hampton Bay Glendale | No | Bond Bridge + compatible remote (UC7083T or similar) |
| Hampton Bay Rockport | No | Smart remote kit or smart wall switch |
| Hampton Bay Windward IV | Partially | Bond Bridge works with RF remote (if you have it) |
Upgrade Paths
- Bond Bridge: Best for fans with RF remotes. Adds app control and voice assistant support.
- Smart Wall Switch: Works if your fan is wired to a switch. Great for homes without a remote.
- WiFi Fan Modules: Some universal kits replace your receiver and add WiFi (Lutron, Treatlife, etc.)
How to Check If Bond Bridge Will Work
- Find your fan remote.
- Look on the back — does it say 315 MHz or 433 MHz? That’s RF — you’re in luck!
- If it’s IR (infrared), Bond won’t work. IR is for TV remotes, not ceiling fans.
Still Not Sure?
Use our Ask a Fan Expert form and we’ll tell you exactly what your fan can (or can’t) do with smart tech.
Wrap-Up
You don’t need to replace your entire ceiling fan to get smart features. Many Hampton Bay models can be upgraded with a smart remote, a Bond Bridge, or even a smart switch — no electrical degree required.
Check your model, pick your upgrade path, and enjoy the sweet, voice-activated breeze of the future.
